How many questions are on the Minnesota DVS knowledge test?

The Minnesota DVS Class D knowledge test is multiple-choice. You must score 80% to pass. Road signs are included — there is no separate signs test. Single score, no sections.

What is the passing score?

You must score 80% to pass. Single unified score.

What happens if I fail?

You must wait until the next calendar day to retake the test. You may take only one written test per day. If you fail two consecutive tests, a $10 fee is charged for each subsequent test. If you fail the road test four times, you must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.

Is the test timed?

No, the real Minnesota DVS test has no time limit. Take your time and read carefully. Our practice exam uses a 30-minute timer to simulate slight pressure, but the real test lets you go at your own pace.

How old do I need to be for a learner's permit?

Age 15 years old. Parental or guardian consent is required. Hold the permit for at least 6 months, complete driver education, and log 40–50 hours of supervised driving (15 hrs at night) before applying for the provisional license at 16.

Does Minnesota use "DUI" or "DWI"?

Minnesota uses DWI — Driving While Impaired. The test will use DWI terminology, not DUI. Key numbers: 0.08% BAC limit (21+), any detectable amount for under 21 ("Not a Drop" law), test refusal = criminal charge + 1–6 year revocation depending on prior offenses.

Is cannabis legal in Minnesota?

Recreational cannabis is legal in Minnesota (legalized 2023). Cannabis is legal for adults 21+, but it is ILLEGAL to use or possess open cannabis in a vehicle on a public street or highway, and driving while impaired by cannabis is a DWI offense with the same penalties as alcohol-impaired driving.

How many hours of practice driving do I need?

40 hours of supervised driving (15 hrs at night) with parent class, or 50 hours (15 hrs at night) without parent class. Under 18: supervisor must be a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the front passenger seat. Age 18+: supervisor must be 18 or older in the front seat.

What are Minnesota's GDL graduated license restrictions?

Minnesota provisional license curfew: midnight to 5:00 AM. Minnesota GDL: Instruction Permit (age 15) → Provisional License (age 16, after 6 months + 40–50 supervised hours + driver ed) → Full Class D (age 18, OR after 12 consecutive clean months on provisional). First 6 months of provisional: max 1 passenger under 20 (immediate family exempt); second 6 months: max 3 passengers under 20.
