15 Tips to Pass Your Minnesota DVS Test on the First Try

The Minnesota knowledge exam trips up many first-time test-takers. These tips put you in the passing group.

Before You Study

1. Understand the test format. Minnesota has one knowledge test: 40 multiple-choice questions (estimated), need 80% to pass. Road signs ARE included โ€” there is no separate signs test.

2. Get the official manual. Download the Minnesota Driver's License Manual from drive.mn.gov. Every test question comes from this manual. It's free.

3. Know what's tested most. The heaviest topics are: road signs (shapes and colors), right-of-way rules, DWI/alcohol laws, school bus stopping rules, and speed limits. Focus your study time here first.

While Studying

4. Memorize the key numbers. Minnesota tests love specific numbers: 0.08% BAC (21+), any detectable amount (under 21), 100 ft signal distance, 10 ft fire hydrant, 30 ft stop sign/signal, 20 ft crosswalk at intersection, 50 ft railroad, 20 ft school bus stop, 6-month permit hold, 40โ€“50 supervised hrs (15 night), $680 DWI reinstatement. Write these on flashcards.

5. Learn sign shapes before colors. Each sign shape has exactly one meaning (octagon = STOP, triangle = YIELD, diamond = warning, pentagon = school). If you know shapes, you can answer even if you can't remember the exact sign.

6. Know DWI, not DUI. Minnesota uses "DWI" (Driving While Impaired), not "DUI." The test will use DWI terminology. Know the 0.08% limit for 21+, any detectable amount (under 21 "Not a Drop" law), and that refusing a breathalyzer means automatic 1โ€“6 year revocation (criminal charge); $680 reinstatement fee. DWI also applies to any controlled substance.

7. Take practice tests โ€” a lot of them. Score 90%+ consistently on practice exams before going to the DMV. Aim higher than the 80% minimum so you have margin for nerves.

Key Rules to Memorize

8. School bus rule โ€” know the exception. On ALL roads, every vehicle in BOTH directions must stop when a school bus has flashing red lights and the stop arm is extended. The ONE exception: if you are on a divided roadway and the bus is on the opposite side of the divider, you do NOT need to stop. Stop at least 20 feet from the bus. Penalty: misdemeanor, fine of at least $500, loss of driving privileges.

9. Minnesota hands-free law โ€” all drivers. Minnesota does have a statewide hands-free law. All drivers: no holding your phone while driving. Under-18 permit or provisional license holders: no phone use at all while driving, even hands-free. Adults: no composing, reading, or sending electronic messages while driving; voice-activated/hands-free mode is permitted.

10. Cannabis is legal in Minnesota (2023) โ€” but not while driving. Recreational cannabis is legal for adults 21+ in Minnesota (legalized 2023). However, it is ILLEGAL to use cannabis in a vehicle on a public road. Driving under the influence of cannabis is a DWI offense with the same penalties as drunk driving.

11. Signal before turning. Minnesota requires signaling at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes. MN does not have a separate 300-foot rule based on speed. Signal early โ€” this is a frequent test question.

Test Day Strategies

12. The safest answer is usually correct. When two options seem right, pick the more cautious one โ€” slow down, yield, stop, check mirrors. Minnesota rewards defensive driving answers.

13. Watch for "All of the above." On Minnesota DVS tests, "All of the above" is correct more often than you'd expect โ€” especially for DWI penalties, suspension triggers, and violation questions.

14. Read every word carefully. Test questions hinge on words like "divided" vs. "undivided" roadway (school bus), "provisional" vs. "full" license, or "first offense" vs. "second offense." One word changes the answer.

15. Don't rush. Minnesota's knowledge test has no time limit. You need 80% to pass. Aim higher than the minimum โ€” so stay calm and read carefully.

Pro tip: If you fail, you can retake the test the next calendar day. But why waste a trip? Score 90%+ on our practice exam at least twice before going in.
