How to Pass the New York NY DMV Written Test

The knowledge test trips up many first-time applicants. Here's exactly what to study and how to walk in prepared.

📋 Know the Test Format

The New York NY DMV knowledge test is 20 questions. You must score at least 70% to pass — meaning you need at least 14 correct and can miss up to 6. But no more than 2 of the 4 road-sign questions can be missed.

If you fail the NY DMV knowledge test you may retake it — there is no mandatory waiting period. The DMV may require you to reapply after repeated failures. Bring the same 6 points of identity proof each time (MV-21 ch. 1, p. 10).

Class D knowledge tests are given at any New York DMV office on touch-screen test stations or on paper. Tests are offered in multiple languages. Students age 15 years 11 months+ can take an early version through the DMV Online Knowledge Test Application (OKTA) at participating high schools. Most DMV offices now require an appointment; book at dmv.ny.gov (MV-21 ch. 1, p. 10).

Most NY applicants must complete an approved 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course (MV-278) or an equivalent high-school/college driver-education course before the road test. Driver-education graduates age 17 receive an MV-285 Certificate of Completion, which allows a full (senior) license at 17 instead of 18 (MV-21 ch. 1, pp. 10–11).

🎯 Top 10 Most-Missed Topics

1

DWI & BAC Limits

0.08%+ = DWI (21+); 0.05–0.07% = DWAI; 0.18%+ = Aggravated DWI; 0.02–0.07% = Zero Tolerance (under 21); 0.04% = CDL limit. Refusing a chemical test under the Implied Consent Law = minimum 1-year revocation + $500 civil penalty, separate from any DWI charge (MV-21 ch. 9).

2

DWI Penalties

1st DWI: $500–$1,000 fine, up to 1 year jail, min 6-month revocation. 2nd DWI within 10 yrs: Class E felony, $1,000–$5,000, up to 4 yrs prison, min 1-yr revocation. 3rd+ within 10 yrs: Class D felony, up to $10,000, up to 7 yrs prison. DWAI 1st: $300–$500, up to 15 days jail, 90-day suspension (MV-21 ch. 9).

3

GDL — Learner & Junior License

Learner Permit at age 16; must hold at least 6 months; supervisor must be 21+ with a valid license for that vehicle, seated in the front seat. On a Class DJ Junior License: curfew 9 pm–5 am (regional variations), max 1 non-family passenger under 21, no NYC driving except with instructor, 120-day suspension for a texting/cell phone conviction (MV-21 ch. 1, pp. 11–16).

4

Following Distance

Use the 2-second rule: pick a fixed object; when the car ahead passes it, count "one thousand one, one thousand two." Reach it before finishing = you're too close. Increase to 3–4 seconds in bad weather, when following large trucks, or at higher speeds (MV-21 ch. 8, p. 47).

5

Speed Limits

Default NY speed limit is 55 mph when nothing is posted. New York City default is 25 mph. Major highways post up to 65 mph. Roundabout interior = 30 mph or less. Work zones can be posted as low as 25 mph, and fines double with 8 license points on a construction-zone speeding conviction (MV-21 ch. 8, p. 47).

6

Signal Distance & Turning

Signal continuously during the last 100 feet before a turn or lane change. In NY you may turn right on red after a full stop and yield, unless a sign prohibits it. Left on red is allowed only from one-way onto one-way. In New York City, turning on red is NOT allowed unless a sign specifically permits it (MV-21 ch. 4, p. 31; ch. 6, p. 39).

7

School Bus Rules

When a school bus flashes its red lights, stop at least 20 feet away in BOTH directions on ALL roadways — including on the opposite side of a divided highway. There is NO divided-highway exception in New York. 1st-offense fine is $250–$400 (MV-21 ch. 6, p. 40).

8

Headlights

Required from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, in rain/snow/sleet/fog, and whenever you cannot see 1,000 feet ahead. Dim high beams to low beam within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle or within 200 ft of a vehicle you are following (MV-21 ch. 10, pp. 60, 62).

9

Parking Rules & Distances

15 ft fire hydrant, 20 ft crosswalk at intersection, 30 ft traffic signal/STOP/YIELD sign, 50 ft railroad crossing, 20 ft fire station driveway (75 ft opposite). Parallel park within 12 inches of the curb. Never in front of a driveway, in a crosswalk, on a bridge, or in a tunnel (MV-21 ch. 7, p. 43).

10

Child Restraint & Safety Belts

Under 4: federally approved safety seat; rear-facing until at least age 2. Ages 4–7: booster seat with lap/shoulder belt. Ages 8–15: seat belt. NY is primary enforcement — driver fine up to $50, each unrestrained passenger under 16 is $25–$100 + 3 points (MV-21 ch. 8, pp. 48–49).

💡 Study Strategies That Work

01

Know Your Passing Score

You need 14 of 20 correct (70%) and at least 2 of 4 sign questions correct. Aim for 90%+ on practice tests to leave yourself a safety margin on the real exam.

02

Use the Key Numbers Quiz

Memorize BAC limits, distances, signal distance, following distances, and suspension periods. These specific numbers appear on virtually every New York test.

03

Review Your Missed Questions

The Weak Spots mode saves every question you got wrong. Replay it until you're hitting 90%+ before going to the NY DMV office.

04

Read the Official Handbook

Download the New York State Driver's Manual (MV-21) at https://dmv.ny.gov/. Every question comes directly from this manual.

05

Know Your Speed Limits

Two NY-specific defaults to memorize: 55 mph if no limit is posted anywhere in the state, and 25 mph in New York City unless otherwise posted. Inside a modern roundabout: 30 mph or less. Work zones can be posted as low as 25 mph (MV-21 ch. 8, p. 47).

06

Study Road Signs

Sign questions are visual — shape, color, and meaning all matter. Use the Road Signs Quiz mode to practice all signs before test day.
