🎯

What to Study Before the Real Test

The West Virginia written test pulls most heavily from these topics. Read through each section below, memorize the numbers, then take the DMV Exam Simulator to test yourself. Aim for 90%+ in practice before you walk in.

Memorize these numbers first. West Virginia test questions are frequently built around specific distances, speeds, BAC levels, and time periods. These come up constantly.

Speed Limits

HIGH FREQUENCY
25 mph
Speed limit in a business or residential district (WV default, p. 42). Always obey posted limits.
15 mph
School zone (when children are present) — zone extends 125 ft along the road from school grounds (p. 42).
70 mph
Interstate maximum (min 55 mph). Open country highway default: 55 mph (p. 42).
Posted
Speed limits are posted for ideal conditions. Drivers must reduce speed for rain, ice, heavy traffic, or any condition that makes the posted speed unsafe.
TODO ft
TODO: Total stopping distance at TODO mph — fill in from West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022) (reaction + braking distance).
TODO ft
TODO: Total stopping distance at TODO mph — fill in from West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022).
📏

Critical Distances & Clearances

HIGH FREQUENCY
15 ft
Do not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant (p. 45)
20 ft
Do not park within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection or 20 feet of a mailbox served by a vehicle carrier (p. 45-46)
30 ft
Do not park within 30 feet of any traffic signal, stop sign, or yield sign (p. 45)
50 ft
Do not park within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing (p. 45)
18 in
Parallel park — right-hand wheels within 18 inches of the curb on a two-way street (p. 47)
Both headlights
After passing, return to your lane only when you can see BOTH headlights of the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror (TODO chapter ref)
500/200 ft
Dim high beams within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle. Use low beams when following within 200 ft of another vehicle (p. 51)
500 ft
Turn on headlights from sunset to sunrise, during fog, smoke, rain, or whenever persons and vehicles cannot be seen clearly at 500 ft (p. 51).
100 ft
Signal at least 100 ft before the turn, lane change, or pulling from a curb (p. 43-44)
Buckle up
Every person in the vehicle must be secured. Drivers must require all occupants to adhere to the safety belt law (p. 10-11, 67).
Space
Passing bicyclists — allow plenty of room when passing a bicycle rider. Never pass if the street is too narrow or you could force the cyclist too close to parked vehicles (TODO chapter ref).
Stop
TODO: Describe West Virginia's school bus stopping rule — when drivers must stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, and any state-specific exceptions (TODO chapter ref).
🍺

DUI & Alcohol Numbers

ALWAYS ON TEST
76%
TODO: Legal BAC limit for drivers 21+ in West Virginia — at or above this level you can be arrested for DUI (TODO chapter ref)
0.02%
Zero Tolerance: any measurable alcohol (0.02%+) in a driver under 21 = loss of license. 1st: $25-$100 fine, 30-day revocation. 2nd: $100-$500, 24 hrs jail, 60-day revocation (p. 21-22).
15 days
1st DUI (BAC<0.15): $100-$500 fine, up to 6 mo jail, 15-day min revocation. BAC 0.15+: $200-$1,000, 2 days-6 mo jail, 45-day revocation (p. 22)
Refusal
Implied Consent: every licensed driver consents to the designated Breathalyzer. Refusal revokes driving privilege 1 year up to life (p. 22)
Safety $TODO
TODO: License reinstatement fee — amount to reinstate the license after a DUI-related suspension (TODO chapter ref).amp; Treatment
Every DUI revocation requires completing a prescribed Safety and Treatment program before reinstatement. Interlock Program allows some drivers to keep driving (p. 22-23).

Road signs are tested heavily. Know each sign's shape, color, and meaning. The real test often shows a sign description and asks what it means.

🔴

Sign Shapes — Each Shape Has One Meaning

ALWAYS TESTED
ShapeMeaningExample
Octagon (8-sided)STOP — always and onlyStop sign
Triangle (pointing down)YIELD — give right of wayYield sign
DiamondWARNING — hazard aheadCurve, pedestrian, deer
Pentagon (5-sided)SCHOOL ZONESchool crossing
Pennant (triangle right)NO PASSING ZONENo-passing pennant
Round (circle)RAILROAD CROSSING advance warningRR crossing sign
Rectangle (vertical)REGULATORY — rules you must followSpeed limit, turn restrictions
Rectangle (horizontal)GUIDE or INFORMATIONStreet name, mile marker
X-shaped crossbuckRAILROAD CROSSING — treat like yieldRailroad crossbuck
🎨

Sign Colors — Color Tells You the Category

ALWAYS TESTED
ColorCategoryWhat It Means
RedRegulatory — STOP / PROHIBITStop, yield, do not enter, wrong way, no-turn circles
YellowWARNINGGeneral hazard warnings — curves, hills, intersections, animals
OrangeWORK ZONE / CONSTRUCTIONConstruction ahead, road crew, slow down and drive with care. TODO: Describe West Virginia's work-zone fine rule (e.g., doubled fines, maximum amount, worker-present requirement) (TODO chapter ref).
GreenGUIDE / DIRECTIONALHighway exits, distances, direction, mile markers

Fluorescent PinkINCIDENT MANAGEMENTCrash clean-up, debris removal, temporary traffic control
⚠️

Signs That Are Frequently Confused

TRICKY
!
No Passing Pennant vs. No U-Turn: The pennant (pointing right) = no passing. A circle with a slash over a U-turn arrow = no U-turn. Very different.
!
Crossbuck (RR) vs. Stop Sign: The crossbuck (white X) = yield/slow down and check. Only stop if a train is coming. The octagon = always stop.
!
Divided Highway Begins vs. Ends: Begins = two arrows pointing apart (median starts). Ends = two arrows merging together (median ends — expect two-way traffic).
!
Merge vs. Lane Ends: Merge = two roads joining (both cars adjust). Lane Ends = one lane disappears — that driver must yield and merge.
!
Red Circle with Slash: Always means that action is PROHIBITED. No left turn, no trucks, no bicycles — whatever is inside the circle is forbidden.

Right of way is the #1 failure topic on the DMV knowledge test. Master every scenario below — these questions will be on your exam.

The Core Right-of-Way Rules

MOST TESTED
1
Uncontrolled intersection — arrive at same time: Yield to the driver on your RIGHT. This is the most tested right-of-way rule.
2
Left turn at green light: You must always yield to oncoming traffic AND pedestrians — even with a green light. A green light is permission to go, not a guarantee of right of way.
3
Pedestrians in a crosswalk: Always yield. Stop and wait until the pedestrian has completely crossed — not just stepped back. This includes jaywalkers in many situations.
4
Blind pedestrian (white cane / guide dog): Absolute right of way — you must stop regardless of where they are crossing.
5
Four-way stop: First to arrive goes first. Simultaneous arrival = yield to the driver on your right. Straight traffic before turning traffic if both arrive at same time from opposite directions.
6
Emergency vehicles (lights + siren): Pull to the right edge of the road and stop. Clear intersections first — never stop IN an intersection.
7
Entering from driveway / private road: Always yield to all traffic on the public road — you have no right of way entering from private property.
8
Roundabout: Vehicles inside the roundabout always have right of way. Entering traffic must yield. When exiting, yield to pedestrians at the crosswalk.
9
Merging onto a highway: Traffic already on the highway has right of way. The merging vehicle must yield and find a safe gap.
10
Non-functioning traffic signal: Treat as an all-way stop. All drivers stop, yield, and take turns.
💡

Right-of-Way Scenarios That Trick People

TRICKY
!
Yellow light: It does NOT mean speed up. If you can stop safely, you must. Proceed only if stopping would be unsafe (you're too close to stop).
!
Already in intersection when light turns red: Complete the turn — you are committed. Other traffic must wait for you to clear.
!
Backing out of a driveway: The reversing vehicle always yields to street traffic. You have no right of way in reverse.
!
Funeral processions: Treat funeral escort vehicles displaying flashing lights the same as emergency vehicles — yield and do not attempt to pass or cut through the procession.
!
Right turn on red: Legal ONLY after a complete stop and yielding to ALL traffic and pedestrians. Rolling right on red is illegal.
!
Left on red: Legal ONLY when turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street — after a complete stop and yielding.
🚥

Traffic Signal Meanings

ALWAYS TESTED
SignalWhat You Must Do
Solid GREENProceed — but yield to traffic already in intersection
Solid YELLOWPrepare to stop if safe; proceed only if stopping would be dangerous
Solid REDStop completely; may turn right on red after stop and yield (unless posted)
GREEN ARROWProtected turn — oncoming traffic must stop. You may turn in the arrow's direction, but still yield to vehicles and pedestrians already in the intersection.
YELLOW ARROWProtected turn is ending — prepare to yield or stop
Flashing YELLOW ARROWUnprotected turn — you MAY turn but MUST yield to oncoming and pedestrians
Flashing REDTreat exactly like a STOP sign — stop, yield, proceed when safe
Flashing YELLOWCaution — slow down and proceed carefully. Do not need to stop.
RED + GREEN ARROWStop for through traffic; turn in direction of arrow only
Signal NOT workingTreat as ALL-WAY STOP — all traffic stops
🛣️

Lane Markings — Know Each One

ON EXAM
1
Broken yellow center line: Passing is permitted from your side when it is safe.
2
Solid yellow line on your side: No passing from your side of the road.
3
Double solid yellow: No passing in either direction.
4
White lines: Separate traffic going in the same direction. Broken = lane change ok. Solid = discouraged (but not always illegal).
5
Yellow lines: Separate traffic going in opposite directions.
6
Center left-turn lane (two-way turn lane): Use ONLY to prepare for and make a left turn. Never use as a travel or passing lane.
7
Yellow X over a lane: Lane is CLOSED — move to a lane with a green arrow immediately.
8
White stop line: Stop your front bumper at or behind this line at intersections and crosswalks.
↔️

Safe Lane Changing Procedure

STEP BY STEP
1
Check your mirrors — rearview and side mirror on the side you're moving to
2
Signal your intent — at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes
3
Look over your shoulder — physically check the blind spot. Mirrors cannot see everything.
4
Change lanes gradually — smooth and controlled, not jerky
5
Cancel signal and adjust speed to match the lane's traffic flow
🚨

DUI questions appear on virtually every DMV knowledge test. Know the BAC levels, implied consent law, and penalties. West Virginia uses "DUI" (Driving Under the Influence).

🍺

DUI Laws — The Numbers You Must Know

ALWAYS ON TEST
SituationConsequence
BAC of 76%+ (driver 21+)DUI — 1st conviction: fine up to $TODO, TODO to TODO in jail, license suspended TODO days. 2nd DUI: up to $TODO. 3rd+: up to $TODO and TODO years. (TODO chapter ref).
Impairment below the legal BAC limitTODO: Describe whether West Virginia allows a DUI charge below the BAC limit when alcohol or drugs impair driving ability (TODO chapter ref).
Test refusal (implied consent)You can lose your driver's license. TODO: Describe West Virginia's implied consent law — what testing you must submit to after a DUI arrest and the suspension length for a 1st refusal vs. subsequent refusals (TODO chapter ref).
BAC — under 21 (Zero Tolerance)TODO: Describe West Virginia's under-21 DUI charge name, penalty class, community service requirement, awareness course requirement, and license suspension length (TODO chapter ref).
Minor purchasing or possessing alcohol (under 21)TODO: Describe driving privilege consequences for a minor in possession / purchasing alcohol in West Virginia (TODO chapter ref).
DUI — causing deathTODO: Describe West Virginia's charge class for DUI causing death — fine, prison range, and the related charge for serious bodily injury (TODO chapter ref).
💡

Critical DUI Facts to Remember

TESTED
1
Implied consent: TODO: Describe West Virginia's implied consent rule — what driving on a public road implies, what test(s) can be requested after a DUI arrest, suspension length for a 1st refusal vs. subsequent refusals, and the reinstatement fee (TODO chapter ref).
2
Only TIME removes alcohol: Coffee, food, cold showers, and fresh air do NOT lower your BAC. Your liver processes about 1 drink per hour — nothing speeds this up (TODO chapter ref).
3
Impairment starts with the first drink: Judgment is the FIRST driving ability affected by alcohol. TODO: Confirm whether West Virginia allows a DUI conviction below the legal BAC limit when driving is impaired (TODO chapter ref).
4
Under-21 Zero Tolerance: TODO: Describe West Virginia's under-21 alcohol-and-driving rule — BAC threshold, the name of the charge, and how it applies even below the standard adult BAC limit (TODO chapter ref).
5
Mixing drugs and alcohol: Never drink alcohol while taking medications or other drugs. These combinations may multiply the effects of alcohol, reduce your ability to drive safely, and could cause serious health problems or even death (TODO chapter ref).
6
Cell phone + GDL: TODO: Describe West Virginia's under-18 wireless device restriction and the all-driver texting/messaging law (TODO chapter ref).
7
Drugs and driving: Driving while impaired by any drug — prescription, over-the-counter, or controlled — is illegal in West Virginia. Even legally prescribed medications that impair your ability to drive can lead to a DUI charge (TODO chapter ref).
🚌

School bus rules are heavily tested. TODO: Describe West Virginia's school bus stopping rule — when drivers must stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, and any state-specific exceptions (TODO chapter ref).

🚌

School Bus Stopping Rules

HEAVILY TESTED
1
Two-lane road / undivided road: ALL traffic in BOTH directions must stop when a school bus has flashing red lights. (TODO: Confirm this rule applies in West Virginia.)
2
West Virginia exceptions — when you do NOT need to stop: TODO: List any state-specific exceptions (e.g., divided highway, different road, controlled-access loading zone) (TODO chapter ref).
3
Same direction — always stop: Traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must ALWAYS stop, regardless of road type or number of lanes (TODO chapter ref).
4
After the bus stops: Remain stopped until the bus has finished receiving or discharging passengers and begins moving without its red lights flashing. Then proceed slowly, watching carefully for children near the roadway (TODO chapter ref).
5
When may you proceed: Only when the red lights STOP flashing and the bus begins moving. The manual states: do not pass until the bus has finished loading/unloading and the red lights are off (TODO chapter ref).
6
Yellow lights = warning: Yellow flashing = bus is about to stop. Slow down immediately and prepare to stop. Do not try to pass before it stops.
7
One of the most tested topics: School bus stop questions appear on many West Virginia DMV knowledge tests. TODO: Reiterate the West Virginia-specific exceptions and confirm the default stopping rule.
8
School buses must stop at ALL railroad crossings — regardless of whether warning signals are active. This is federal law.
9
Penalty for passing a stopped school bus — 1st conviction: Fine of $TODO to $TODO. 2nd conviction: $TODO–$TODO, possible license suspension up to TODO months. Causing serious bodily injury: TODO (TODO chapter ref).
10
Serious bodily injury — repeat offense: TODO penalty class and fine range (TODO chapter ref).

Speed Laws — What You Must Know

ON EVERY TEST
1
Basic Speed Law: Drive at a speed that is reasonable and proper for existing conditions — even if that means going below the posted limit. Rain, fog, heavy traffic, school zones all require reduced speed.
2
Posted limits are MAXIMUMS: You may never legally exceed a posted limit, regardless of conditions, traffic, or what other drivers are doing.
3
Minimum speed law: Do not drive so slowly that you impede or block the normal flow of traffic. Driving too slowly is also illegal.
4
Work zone caution: Reduce speed in work zones. TODO: Describe West Virginia's work zone fine rule (e.g., doubled fines, maximum amount) and any worker-present requirement (TODO chapter ref).
5
"Over-driving your headlights": TODO: Describe West Virginia's headlight-required hours (e.g., minutes after sunset / before sunrise), the visibility distance that triggers headlights, and weather conditions requiring low beams. Never drive faster than you can stop within the distance your headlights illuminate (TODO chapter ref).
6
Four-Second Sight Distance Rule: To check if you're going too fast for conditions, pick a stationary object ahead. Count "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, four-one-thousand." If you reach the object before finishing — you are going too fast for the conditions. Slow down (TODO chapter ref).
↔️

Following Distance — The 2-Second Rule

TESTED
1
Pick a fixed object — a sign, overpass, or lane marking ahead
2
When the car ahead passes it, start counting: "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand"
3
If you pass the object before 2 seconds — you are following too closely. Slow down and increase the gap. In adverse conditions, increase to 4 or more seconds.

💡 When to increase beyond 2 seconds

  • Rain, snow, ice, or fog → 4 seconds minimum
  • Driving at night → increase beyond 2 seconds
  • Following a large truck or motorcycle → 4+ seconds
  • Towing a trailer → 4 seconds minimum
  • Driving at highway speeds → increase distance proportionally
📐

Passing Rules

TESTED
You MAY pass when: There is a broken yellow line on your side, you have sufficient sight distance, and there is no sign or condition prohibiting passing.
NEVER pass: On a hill, curve, or any place where vision is limited; near or crossing an intersection or railroad crossing; near a bridge, viaduct, or tunnel; in no-passing zones (solid yellow on your side). TODO: Confirm West Virginia-specific minimum distances (e.g., "within TODO feet") and any other state-specific no-pass conditions (TODO chapter ref).
When it is safe to return: You may move back into your original lane when both headlights of the passed vehicle are visible in your rearview mirror.
Passing on the right: Legal when the vehicle ahead is making a left turn and there is a safe lane to the right, or on a multi-lane road.
🅿️

Parking Clearance Requirements

TESTED
LocationMinimum Clearance
Fire hydrantTODO ft — do not park within TODO ft (TODO chapter ref)
Stop sign / yield sign / flashing signal / traffic control deviceTODO ft — do not park within TODO ft of these (TODO chapter ref)
Pedestrian safety zoneTODO ft — do not park within TODO ft of a pedestrian safety zone (TODO chapter ref)
Crosswalk at intersectionTODO ft — do not park within TODO ft of a crosswalk at an intersection (TODO chapter ref)

Driveway entrance (public or private)Not in front of — always prohibited
Accessible (handicapped) spaceNever — also do not park on the diagonal access lines (TODO chapter ref)
Inside an intersection or on a crosswalkNever — always illegal
Handicapped space (without placard)Never park here
Bridge, overpass, or tunnelNever — always prohibited (TODO chapter ref)
No Stopping zoneNever stop here, for any reason
No Parking zoneNo parking — may stop to load/unload
⛰️

Parking on Hills — Wheel Position

TRICK QUESTION
💡

The rule: always turn wheels so that if the car rolls, it rolls away from traffic or is caught by the curb.

SituationTurn WheelsWhy
Facing DOWNHILL, WITH curbRIGHT (into curb)Car rolls into curb and stops
Facing DOWNHILL, NO curbRIGHT (away from road)Car rolls away from traffic
Facing UPHILL, WITH curbLEFT (away from curb)Car rolls back, caught by curb
Facing UPHILL, NO curbRIGHT (away from road)Car rolls away from traffic

💡 Memory trick

  • Going downhill with a curb = wheels RIGHT into the curb
  • Going uphill with a curb = wheels LEFT, away from curb (tire catches it when rolling back)
  • No curb either way = wheels RIGHT, away from road
🎓

GDL questions appear on many tests. Know West Virginia's Graduated Driver Licensing program, the restrictions in each phase, and the specific ages, hold periods, and curfew hours.

🎓

TODO: Describe any driver-education requirement for new adult applicants in West Virginia (TODO chapter ref).
TODO: Describe any all-driver wireless-device or texting-while-driving prohibition in West Virginia (TODO chapter ref).
🛡️

Emergency Situations — What to Do

TESTED
💨
Tire blowout: Hold the wheel FIRMLY. Ease off gas (don't brake suddenly). Let the car slow naturally. Then gently steer to safety. Sudden braking causes a spin.
💧
Hydroplaning: Ease off gas, hold wheel steady, avoid braking. Let tires re-contact the road. Don't jerk the wheel or brake hard.
🔥
Engine fire: Pull over immediately, turn off engine, get EVERYONE out and move far away (100+ feet). Call 911. Never open the hood.
Brakes fail: Pump brakes rapidly to build pressure. Downshift to use engine braking. Use parking brake carefully (gradually). Steer to safety.
🌊
Accelerator sticks: Shift to NEUTRAL immediately. Apply brakes. Pull over. Turn engine off.
🌀
Vehicle skids: Ease off gas and brakes. Steer in the direction you want the front to go (into the skid). Do not overcorrect.
🚂
Stalled on railroad tracks: Get EVERYONE out IMMEDIATELY. Move away at a 45° angle in the direction the train is coming — so debris flies away from you. Call 911 and the railroad ENS number.
🌫️
Driving in fog: Use LOW beams (high beams reflect off fog and blind you). Slow significantly. Use fog lights if available. Consider pulling over.
😴
Drowsy driving: Only cure = sleep. Pull over and rest. Coffee, window down, and music are NOT effective solutions. Drowsy driving equals drunk driving in impairment level.
❄️
Stranded in a blizzard: Stay in the vehicle (it's shelter and visible). Run engine briefly for heat with window cracked to prevent CO poisoning. Signal for help with hazards.
🧠

Defensive Driving Principles

ESSENTIAL
1
Scan ahead: Look 15 seconds ahead (about a city block in town, farther on highways). Check mirrors every few seconds and whenever slowing, changing lanes, or approaching intersections (TODO chapter ref).
2
Keep an escape route: Always know where you could go if the car ahead stopped suddenly.
3
Bridges freeze first: Cold air circulates above AND below a bridge. Bridges ice before road surface — always treat them as potentially icy in winter.
4
Head-on collision approaching: Brake hard and steer RIGHT — even off the road. A head-on crash at speed is almost always fatal; going off-road is survivable.
5
Road rage: Never engage, retaliate, or make eye contact. Don't respond with gestures. Slow down, create distance. Report to 911 if dangerous.
6
Front wheel off pavement: Don't jerk the wheel — it can roll the car. Ease off gas, brake gently, and gradually steer back. Hold on tight.
🔧

Vehicle Equipment Requirements

TESTED
EquipmentRequirement
Headlights (on)TODO: Describe West Virginia's headlight rule — required hours (e.g., minutes after sunset / before sunrise), the visibility distance threshold, weather conditions requiring low beams, and the parking-lights-only rule (TODO chapter ref).
High beams (dim)TODO: Describe West Virginia's high-beam dim distances — within TODO ft of an oncoming vehicle and TODO ft when following another vehicle, plus weather conditions requiring low beams (TODO chapter ref).

Turn signalsTODO: Describe West Virginia's turn-signal distance requirement (e.g., signal continuously for the last TODO ft before turning) and any speed-based variations (TODO chapter ref).
Tinted windowsTODO: Describe West Virginia's window-tint limits for the skills test (front vs. back %), and the rule that tinting must not obstruct the driver's view (TODO chapter ref).
TVs / video screens visible to driverProhibited while vehicle is in motion (navigation is excepted)
MufflerMust prevent excessive or unusual noise
BrakesTODO: Describe West Virginia's foot-brake stopping requirement (e.g., stop within TODO ft at TODO mph) and the parking brake requirement (TODO chapter ref).
WipersMust adequately clean the windshield when used

Seat belts & child restraintsTODO: Describe West Virginia's safety belt law — who must wear, primary vs. secondary enforcement, fine range. TODO: Add child safety seat requirements (age/height/weight thresholds) and the fine range for an unsecured child (TODO chapter ref).
💡

Headlight Rules That Are Tested

TESTED
1
Headlights required by West Virginia law: TODO: Describe required hours (minutes after sunset / before sunrise), the visibility distance threshold, and weather conditions requiring low beams (TODO chapter ref).
2
Parking lights ≠ headlights: Parking lights are for indicating a parked vehicle only. TODO: Confirm whether West Virginia prohibits driving with parking lights only (TODO chapter ref).
3
Dim high beams: TODO: Describe West Virginia's dim distance for an oncoming vehicle (e.g., within TODO ft) and when following another vehicle (e.g., within TODO ft). Also use low beams in fog, heavy rain, sleet, snow, or dust (TODO chapter ref).
4
Night driving — "drive in your headlights": Never drive faster than you can stop within the distance lit by your headlights. This is called over-driving your headlights and is dangerous (TODO chapter ref).

Before the Test — What to Do

PREPARATION
1
Take the DMV Exam Simulator at least 5 times and score 90%+ consistently. Don't go in when you're scoring 80% — aim higher than the minimum.
2
Use the "Weak Spots" mode the night before. Every question you got wrong — review those explanations until you understand WHY, not just what the answer is.
3
Memorize the Key Numbers tab — BAC limits, distances, suspension periods, speed limits. These are direct exam fodder.
4
Get a good night's sleep. Drowsy test-taking impairs recall just like drowsy driving impairs reaction time.
5
Bring required documents: TODO: List West Virginia required documents (e.g., proof of identity, residency, Social Security number, citizenship/lawful presence), any under-18 parent/guardian signature requirement, any state-specific forms (e.g., school enrollment), and a reminder to bring glasses/contacts if needed (TODO chapter ref).
🧠

During the Test — How to Answer

STRATEGY
1
The safest answer is usually correct. When in doubt, pick the option that is most cautious, most yields, or stops the most. West Virginia tests reward safe, defensive driving choices.
2
Watch for "NEVER" and "ALWAYS" options. These are sometimes traps — but in West Virginia driving law, there actually are many absolute rules (ALWAYS stop for school bus, NEVER pass on a hill crest, etc.).
3
"All of the above" is very often the correct answer on DMV knowledge tests — especially for questions about DUI charges, suspension triggers, and violations.
4
Read every word. Test questions often hinge on words like "divided highway" vs. "undivided," "business district" vs. "residential," or "first offense" vs. "subsequent offense."
5
Refusing a BAC test — can cost your license. For DUI questions: refusing a chemical BAC test can result in losing your driver's license under West Virginia's implied consent law. Do not assume refusal protects you from consequences (TODO chapter ref).
6
The real West Virginia DMV knowledge test: TODO: Describe question count, passing percentage, correct answers needed, whether road signs are part of the test or separate, and how many questions can be missed and still pass.

DMV Written Test · Recommended Study Approach

The Smartest Way
to Pass Your Test

A proven 4-phase approach that builds real understanding — not just memorization. Work through each phase at your own pace, and you'll walk into the DMV ready to pass on your first try.

📱 Uses This App 🎯 25 Qs · 76% to Pass 🧠 4 Phases · Your Pace ✅ 90%+ Before You Go

⚡ How This Approach Works

🧠
Learn before you quiz. Read the material first so practice questions teach you patterns — not just random answers.
🎯
Fix what's weak, skip what's strong. The app tracks every wrong answer. Spend your time where it matters most.
📈
Build up gradually. Numbers → Study Guide → Practice → Topics → Simulator. Each phase builds on the last.
🏁
Don't go until you're ready. Score 90%+ on the simulator twice before visiting the DMV. You can miss up to 6 (19 of 25 correct needed) — but aim for 90%+ to be safe.
🧠 Phase 1 Learn — Build Your Foundation
🔢
Step 1 · Start Here
Memorize the Key Numbers
Study Guide → 🔢 Key Numbers tab · then take the Key Numbers Quiz
⏱ 30–40 min
1
Click in the top bar → open the tab.
2
Read every number out loud. Speed limits, distances, BAC limits, suspension periods. Saying them out loud forces your brain to process them more deeply.
3
Write these on paper: TODO mph urban · TODO mph hwy · 0.08% BAC (21+) · TODO under-21 BAC · TODO ft signal · TODO ft dim beams · TODO ft follow-dim · TODO ft headlight visibility · TODO ft hydrant · TODO ft crosswalk · TODO ft stop sign · TODO ft railroad · TODO in parallel park · TODO sec (low speed) · TODO sec (high speed) · $TODO (1st DUI) · $TODO reinstatement fee
4
Go home → click . Take it without your notes. Check your score.
5
Under 85%? Re-read the Key Numbers tab, then retake the quiz. Repeat until you hit 85%+.
💡
Why numbers first? A meaningful share of real knowledge test questions ask for a specific number. These are free points if you know them — and guaranteed wrong answers if you don't.
📖
Step 2 · The Big 4 Topics
Read the 4 Most-Tested Study Tabs
Study Guide → Right of Way · Alcohol & DUI · Road Signs · Signals & Lanes
⏱ 40–50 min
1
— read completely. This is the #1 failure topic. Understand left turns at green lights and West Virginia's school bus rule (TODO: summarize the default stopping rule and any state-specific exceptions) (TODO chapter ref).
2
— key facts: BAC 76%+ = DUI; 1st conviction: fine up to $TODO, TODO jail time, TODO day suspension. Under 21 = TODO BAC (Zero Tolerance). Refusing breath/blood: TODO-day suspension (1st). Reinstatement fee: $TODO.
3
— shapes and colors tables. Octagon = stop, triangle down = yield, diamond = warning, pentagon = school zone, pennant = no passing.
4
— flashing red vs. yellow, green arrow vs. regular green, right-on-red rules (must make complete stop first, yield to pedestrians and traffic).
ℹ️
Don't try to memorize every word. Focus on understanding WHY each rule exists. When you understand the reasoning, you can figure out answers even when questions are worded differently from what you studied.
📖
Step 3 · The Rest of the Guide
Read the Remaining Study Tabs
School Buses · Parking · Teen Laws · Speed & Following · Safe Driving · Equipment
⏱ 30–40 min
1
— TODO: Summarize West Virginia's school bus stopping rule and any state-specific exceptions. Always on the test.
2
— memorize the 4 hill parking scenarios. Trick: no curb = always turn wheels right.
3
— West Virginia GDL: Learner License at age TODO (hold TODO months) → Provisional License at age TODO (curfew TODO; max TODO non-family passenger restriction) → Full license at age TODO (Chapter TODO).
4
— following distance rule, passing rules, and when to increase your following distance. Know the stopping distances from West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022).
5
— hydroplaning, blowout, skid recovery, fog driving. Understand the logic — don't memorize.
6
— TODO: Describe West Virginia's headlight-required hours and visibility threshold. Dim high beams within TODO ft of oncoming vehicles; use low beams when following within TODO ft (TODO chapter ref).
Pro tip: If you want even deeper detail, download the 📕 Official West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022) → for the full official content. The study guide gives you the highlights, the manual gives you everything.
Take a real break here. Sleep on it if you can — your brain consolidates memory overnight. Phase 2 works best after at least a few hours (or a night) away from studying.
📝 Phase 2 Practice — Test Yourself
📚
Step 4 · First Practice Run
Full Practice Bank — Work Through 60–100 Questions
Home → 📚 Full Practice Bank · no timer, read every explanation
⏱ 45–60 min
1
Click . This gives you all 530+ questions in random order with no timer.
2
Read every explanation — even when you get it right. The explanations contain extra detail and reasoning that will help you on tricky test questions.
3
Do at least 60–100 questions. The app automatically saves every wrong answer so you can drill them later.
4
Click See Results when done. Note which categories you failed most — those are the targets for Phase 3.
ℹ️
Getting things wrong is the point. This is a learning session, not an exam. Every wrong answer you discover now is one you'll get right on test day.
🏆
Step 5 · Topic Deep-Dives
Practice Your 3 Weakest Categories
Home → Choose Your Practice Mode → pick Full Practice Bank or Quick Drill
⏱ 30–40 min
1
Look at your results from Step 4. Find the 3 categories where you got the most wrong (e.g., Right of Way, DUI, Road Signs).
2
Use the Study Guide to review your weak topics, then run the Full Practice Bank or Quick Drill to test yourself on all categories.
3
Repeat for your 2nd and 3rd weakest topics. Focused drilling is much more efficient than random practice.
4
Target: 80%+ on each topic. Under 80%? Go back to the Study Guide tab for that topic, re-read it, then retake.
🎯 Phase 3 Fix — Attack Your Weak Spots
🎯
Step 6 · The Most Important Step
Weak Spots Mode — Drill Every Wrong Answer
Home → 🎯 Weak Spots Only · the app loads your mistakes automatically
⏱ 30–45 min
1
Click . The app loads every question you've gotten wrong so far — automatically.
2
Before you answer — think about why each option might be right or wrong. Slow down and reason through it.
3
Still don't understand an answer? Open the Study Guide tab for that topic and re-read just that section. Or download the official manual for the full official explanation.
4
Retake Weak Spots until you score 85%+ on it. 2–3 rounds is completely normal — that's exactly how this is supposed to work.
This is the single most valuable thing you can do. Research shows that practicing things you got wrong is 3–5x more effective than re-reading material you already know. Don't skip this step.
Take a break. At least 30 minutes. Let your brain rest before the simulation phase.
🏁 Phase 4 Prove It — Simulate the Real Test
📋
Step 7 · The Big Test
DMV Exam Simulator — Full Simulation
Home → 📋 DMV Exam Simulator · 25 questions · 20 min timer
⏱ 20–30 min
1
Click . 25 random questions, 20-minute simulator countdown, need 76% to pass.
2
Treat it like the real thing. No notes. No Study Guide. Sit quietly, read every question fully, and give your best answer.
3
Check your score against the table below and follow the action for your result.
Your ScoreStatusWhat to Do Next
Under 75%Needs more workGo back to Phase 3 — run Weak Spots mode on your wrong answers. Re-read the Study Guide for those topics. Then try the simulator again.
75% – 89%Almost thereRun Weak Spots on what you missed, then take the simulator again. You're close — one more round should get you there.
90%+Ready! 🎉Run the simulator one more time to confirm. Score 90%+ twice → you are ready for the real test.
🔁
Step 8 · Repeat Until 90%+
Fix → Retest → Confirm
Retry Wrong Ones → DMV Simulator → repeat until you pass twice in a row
⏱ 30–45 min per cycle
1
From the results screen click . Drill every question you got wrong in the simulator.
2
For any question you still don't understand — open the Study Guide, find the right section, and re-read that rule. Or download the official manual for the full explanation.
3
Run the again. Keep going until you hit 90%+ twice in a row.
The magic number is 90% twice. If you can score 90% on random questions under timed conditions two times in a row, you know the material — not just the specific questions.
🌙 Night Before Refresh — Don't Cram
🌙
Final Review — 20 Minutes Max
Quick Refresh, Then Sleep
Key Numbers tab + Test-Day Tips tab only · No new material
⏱ 20 min max
1
Open tab in the Study Guide. Read through once — don't study, just refresh.
2
Open the tab. Read the strategy section — especially "safest answer wins" and the Implied Consent rule for DUI refusal.
3
Take one as a confidence check. Score 80%+? Close the app and go to sleep. You're ready.
4
Go to sleep at your normal time. Being well-rested is worth more than another hour of studying.
⚠️
Do NOT cram the night before. Your brain needs sleep to consolidate everything you've learned. More than an hour of study at this point actually hurts performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the West Virginia permit test?

The West Virginia knowledge examination has at least 25 questions, automated and timed. You must answer 19 of the 25 correctly (76%) to pass. Road signs are mixed in with rules questions — no separate signs test. To confirm current details, call the DMV at 1-800-642-9066 or visit dmv.wv.gov. (p. 24)

What does DUI mean in West Virginia?

DUI stands for Driving Under the Influence. The adult BAC limit is 0.08% (drivers 21+). Under 21, any measurable amount of alcohol (0.02%+) triggers Zero Tolerance loss of the driver's license. A BAC between 0.05% and 0.08% is relevant evidence of impairment and can still support a DUI conviction. (p. 21)

What is West Virginia's following distance rule?

West Virginia uses the three-to-four second rule in good conditions. Pick a fixed object ahead; when the vehicle in front passes it, count "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand…" If you reach the object before three, you're too close. Increase to at least 4 seconds when it's dark or raining and at least 6 seconds on snow or ice — stopping on ice can take up to 12× the distance of dry pavement. (p. 47, 63)

What is the minimum age for a West Virginia learner's permit?

15 years old for a Level 1 GDL instruction permit (ages 15–17 use the Graduated Driver's License program). You must hold Level 1 for at least 180 consecutive days, conviction-free, before advancing to Level 2 at age 16. Level 3 (full) requires another 12 months conviction-free and age 17+. Adults 18 and over apply for a regular Class E instruction permit (valid 6 months; hold at least 30 days before the road skills test). (p. 9–12)

Is the West Virginia permit test free to practice?

Yes, this practice site is completely free. Every question is verified against the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022).

Who do I call to report an emergency on West Virginia highways?

Dial 911 for any emergency. Crashes resulting in injury, death, or property damage over $1,000 must be reported within 5 days to the local police department (if in a municipality), the county sheriff, or the nearest West Virginia State Police office (WV Code §17C-4-6). For roadside assistance on interstates, look for the West Virginia Courtesy Patrol signs. (p. 16, 74–75)

What Makes the West Virginia Written Test Different

The West Virginia driver's licensing test is administered by the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), a branch of the Department of Transportation. The official exam is the Class E knowledge examination — at least 25 automated multiple-choice questions covering the material in the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (Revised 07/2022). You must answer 19 out of 25 correctly (76%) to pass, and any question not answered in the prescribed time is counted incorrect. West Virginia's standout hands-free law fines drivers $100 on the first offense, $200 on the second, and $300 plus 3 points on the third — and drivers under 18 may not use any wireless device while driving except to contact 9-1-1 (WV Code §17C-14-15).

West Virginia uses DUI (Driving Under the Influence) with a 0.08% BAC threshold for drivers 21+ and 0.02% Zero Tolerance for drivers under 21 (any measurable alcohol causes license loss). A 1st DUI with BAC under 0.15% carries a $100–$500 fine, up to 6 months jail, and a 15-day minimum revocation; BAC 0.15%+ is $200–$1,000, 2 days–6 months jail, and a 45-day revocation. A 2nd DUI is $1,000–$3,000, 6–12 months jail, and a 10-year revocation. A 3rd or subsequent DUI is a felony: $3,000–$5,000, 1–3 years prison, and lifetime revocation. Under the Implied Consent Law, refusing the Breathalyzer revokes your license for at least 1 year and up to life. Every fact on this page is verified against the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022) published by the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.

West Virginia's three-tier Graduated Driver Licensing program begins at age 15 with the Level 1 GDL instruction permit — requires parental consent on form DMV-DS-23P, a School Driver Eligibility Certificate, and a licensed driver age 21+ in the right front passenger seat. Level 1 drivers may only drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., may carry no more than 2 non-family passengers, and must stay conviction-free for 180 consecutive days before moving to Level 2. Level 2 (age 16+) allows solo driving 5:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m.; from 10:00 p.m.–5:00 a.m. a licensed adult 21+ must supervise (exceptions for work, school, religious activity, or emergency). First 6 months of Level 2: no non-family passengers under 20; second 6 months: maximum of one. Level 3 unrestricted license is available at age 17 after 12 conviction-free months at Level 2. Two Level 1 convictions revoke the permit for 90 days; a second Level 2 conviction revokes the license until age 18.

This free practice test is verified against the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022) and is built for anyone testing at DMV regional offices in Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, Wheeling, Beckley, Clarksburg, Martinsburg, Fairmont, Weirton, Elkins, Lewisburg, and every other West Virginia location. The DMV knowledge test fee is $7.50 per attempt, a Level 1 GDL permit is $7.50, and Class E license fees are $5.00 per year (Drive for Five program — expires on a birthday divisible by 5). Free practice here, no signup, no paywall.
