How to Pass the West Virginia DMV Written Test

The knowledge test trips up many first-time applicants. Here's exactly what to study and how to walk in prepared.

📋 Know the Test Format

The West Virginia DMV knowledge test is approximately 25 questions. You must score at least 76% to pass — meaning you need at least 19 correct and can miss up to 6.

If you fail, WV State Code §17B-2-6 says you cannot retest within one (1) week. Knowledge test fee is $7.50 per attempt. Use the waiting period to drill weak spots here.

The knowledge test is automated and given in-person at any of the 25 West Virginia DMV regional offices (Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.). No cell phones, PDAs, Bluetooth, or electronic devices allowed in the exam room. Only the applicant is allowed in the room.

For Level 2 GDL applicants, a driver's education course approved by the WV Department of Education can substitute for the 50-hour parent-certified BTW log. Audio versions of the knowledge exam are available for the reading-impaired on request (administered with headphones).

🎯 Top 10 Most-Missed Topics

1

DUI & BAC Limits

0.08% BAC for drivers 21+. Zero Tolerance for drivers under 21 — any measurable amount (0.02%+) = loss of license. BAC 0.05–0.08% is "relevant evidence of impairment" and can still support a DUI conviction. Time is the ONLY way to lower BAC.

2

DUI Penalties

1st DUI (BAC<0.15): $100–$500, up to 6 mo jail, 15-day revocation. 1st (BAC≥0.15): $200–$1,000, 45-day revocation. 2nd: $1,000–$3,000, 6–12 mo jail, 10-year revocation. 3rd+: $3,000–$5,000, 1–3 yrs, lifetime revocation. Refusing the breath test = 1 year to lifetime revocation (Implied Consent).

3

GDL — Level 1, 2, and 3

Level 1 at age 15: 21+ adult in right front, 5 a.m.–10 p.m., max 2 non-family passengers, 180 conviction-free days to advance. Level 2 at 16: solo 5 a.m.–10 p.m., 21+ supervisor 10 p.m.–5 a.m.; no non-family under 20 for first 6 months, max 1 for second 6 months. Level 3 at 17 after 12 conviction-free months.

4

Following Distance

3–4 second rule in good conditions. Use at least 4 seconds at night or in rain, and at least 6 seconds on snow or ice. Stopping on ice or snow can take up to 12× the distance of dry pavement. (p. 47, 63)

5

Speed Limits

Unless posted otherwise: 25 mph business/residential · 55 mph open country · 70 mph interstate (55 mph minimum) · 15 mph school zone when children are present · 25 mph or less for low-speed vehicles. School zone extends 125 ft from school grounds.

6

Signal Distance & Turning

Signal at least 100 feet before any turn or lane change. Right-on-red: complete stop + yield + no prohibiting sign. Left-on-red: ONLY from a one-way street onto another one-way street, after a complete stop. Passing prohibited within 100 ft of an intersection or railroad crossing.

7

School Bus Rules

On any road (public, private, parking lot, driveway), traffic in BOTH directions must stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights. The only exception is an Interstate highway with a median — oncoming traffic need not stop. Min fine $500 + 60-day suspension for passing. (p. 50)

8

Headlights

Use headlights from sunset to sunrise, and any time visibility is less than 500 ft (fog, smoke, rain). Dim high beams within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle and within 200 ft of the vehicle you're following. Use low beams in fog — high beams reflect back into your eyes. (p. 51)

9

Parking Rules & Distances

15 ft from fire hydrant · 20 ft from crosswalk at intersection · 30 ft from stop sign or signal · 50 ft from nearest rail of a railroad crossing · 20 ft from a mailbox served by a carrier vehicle. Parallel park within 18 inches of the curb. (p. 45–47)

10

Child Restraint & Safety Belts

Child safety seat required for every child under 8 years old unless the child is at least 4'9" tall (then a safety belt is sufficient). All occupants must be buckled — it is the driver's responsibility to require all occupants to follow the safety-belt law. (p. 67)

💡 Study Strategies That Work

01

Know Your Passing Score

WV requires 19 of 25 correct (76%). Aim for 90%+ on this practice test twice in a row before booking your DMV appointment — that extra margin covers nerves on the day.

02

Use the Key Numbers Quiz

Memorize BAC limits, distances, signal distance, following distances, and suspension periods. These specific numbers appear on virtually every West Virginia test.

03

Review Your Missed Questions

The Weak Spots mode saves every question you got wrong. Replay it until you're hitting 90%+ before going to the DMV office.

04

Read the Official Handbook

Download the West Virginia Driver's Licensing Handbook (07/2022) at https://transportation.wv.gov/DMV/. Every question comes directly from this manual.

05

Know Your Speed Limits

West Virginia's business/residential default is 25 mph — lower than many other states. School zone is 15 mph when children are present and the zone extends 125 ft from school grounds. Interstate maximum is 70 mph with a 55 mph minimum.

06

Study Road Signs

Sign questions are visual — shape, color, and meaning all matter. Use the Road Signs Quiz mode to practice all signs before test day.
