Wyoming WYDOT Permit Test FAQ
Common questions about the Wyoming WYDOT knowledge test, learner's permit, GDL program, and driver's license requirements.
How many questions are on the Wyoming WYDOT knowledge test? ▼
The real Wyoming Class C knowledge test has 25 multiple-choice questions pulled from the 2021 Wyoming Driver License Manual. Topics range from speed limits and DWUI law to right-of-way, road signs, and emergency procedures. There is no time limit — work through every question carefully.
What is the passing score for the Wyoming written test? ▼
You need 80% to pass — that means 20 correct out of 25. Miss 6 or more and it counts as a fail. Our 530+ practice questions are graded the same way so you'll know exactly where you stand.
What happens if I fail the knowledge test? ▼
If you miss too many, you must wait at least 24 hours before retesting. Miss 13 or more questions and the wait grows to 3 days. Wyoming does not cap the number of retakes, but you may pay a fee on each attempt — and a long pattern of failures can delay your full license. Use our missed-questions mode to drill the topics you keep missing.
What is the minimum age for a Wyoming learner license? ▼
You can apply for a Wyoming Instruction Permit at age 15. Applicants under 18 need a parent or legal guardian's signature. While driving with the permit, a licensed adult 18 or older must occupy the front passenger seat at all times.
What are the GDL restrictions in Wyoming? ▼
Wyoming's Intermediate license (issued at 16) requires 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with 10 hours at night. While Intermediate, you may NOT drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and you may carry only 1 non-family passenger under 18 (unless a licensed adult 18+ is in the vehicle). Violating either restriction triggers a 30-day suspension. The Intermediate license expires 30 days after your 17th birthday — full driving privileges arrive at 16½ if you've held the Intermediate at least 6 months and finished an approved driver-ed course, or automatically at 17.
What is Wyoming's Zero Tolerance law for minors? ▼
Drivers under 21 face a Youthful Driver Suspension at any BAC of 0.02% or higher — that is roughly one drink. A 1st under-21 DWUI carries a 90-day suspension; a 2nd offense within 2 years carries 6 months. Transporting alcohol to anyone under 21 in your vehicle is a 1-year suspension on its own.
What is the legal BAC limit in Wyoming? ▼
Adults 21+: 0.08% per se DWUI limit. Under 21: 0.02% triggers Youthful Driver Suspension. CDL drivers in commercial vehicles: 0.04%. Even at 0.05%, you can still be convicted of DWUI if other evidence supports it. Coffee, cold showers, and exercise do NOT lower BAC — only time will (the liver eliminates roughly one drink per hour).
What is the speed limit in a Wyoming urban/residential area? ▼
Wyoming default limits unless otherwise posted: 30 mph residential or business, 20 mph school zone, 70 mph secondary highway, and 80 mph on interstates (some segments are still 75). A "blind" intersection where trees, bushes, or buildings block your view is 15 mph or less. While passing on a 2-lane road you may exceed the limit by up to 10 mph.
How close to a fire hydrant can I park in Wyoming? ▼
Stay at least 15 feet away from any fire hydrant. You also cannot park on sidewalks, in crosswalks, in intersections, on bridges or in tunnels, or alongside street construction. Disabled spaces require a placard or disabled plates. On a hill with a curb: turn wheels AWAY from the curb facing uphill, TOWARD the curb facing downhill. No curb? Always turn wheels TOWARD the edge of the road and set the parking brake.
What are the DWUI penalties in Wyoming? ▼
1st DWUI in 10 years: 90-day suspension. A BAC of 0.15%+ on a 1st offense adds a 6-month ignition interlock restricted license. 2nd DWUI: increased fines, possible jail, and longer suspension. 3rd or subsequent DWUI in 10 years: 3-year revocation. 4th+: lifetime ignition interlock requirement (with the option to petition after 5 years). Refusing the chemical test under Implied Consent? Officers may obtain a warrant for it.
What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in Wyoming? ▼
Wyoming requires 25/50/20 liability — $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $20,000 property damage. After a DWUI or other major violation you must file an SR-22 and maintain it for 3 years. The standard reinstatement fee is $50.
Can I turn left on a red light in Wyoming? ▼
Right turn on red is allowed in Wyoming after a complete stop, unless a sign prohibits it — and you must yield to pedestrians and approaching traffic. Left turn on red is permitted only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, and only after a full stop. A police officer's signals always override the lights.
How do I renew my Wyoming driver's license? ▼
Wyoming Class C licenses are typically renewed every 4 years through WYDOT Driver Services. Some renewals can be completed online; an in-person visit is required periodically for a new photo and vision check (20/40 minimum with both eyes). Renewal fee is $30 plus a $5 tech fee. If you change your address, notify WYDOT in writing within 10 days.
