How to Get Your Oklahoma Driver's License

Step-by-step guide to Oklahoma's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) — from first permit at age 15 (with driver ed) or age 15/16 to a full Class D License at 18.

1

Learner Permit — Age 15+ (or 16 without driver education)

At age 15 (with driver education) or 16 (without), you may apply for a Class D Learner Permit. All applicants under 18 require parent/guardian written consent. Must pass the vision and knowledge examinations — or bring in a DE-99 form from an approved Driver's Education course currently being attended. The Learner Permit is valid for 1 year and may be renewed with retesting (Oklahoma Driver Manual).

Pass the tests at any Oklahoma SOK driver licensing office, or take the knowledge exam online at any Service Oklahoma driver license exam location (oklahoma.gov/service/locations). A parent or legal guardian must accompany all applicants under 18.

Required documents: 1 document proving U.S. citizenship or lawful status (certified birth certificate, U.S. passport, etc.) · Proof of Social Security number · 2 documents proving Oklahoma principal address from 2 different sources · Parent/guardian signature required for under 18

While on the Learner Permit: A licensed driver at least 21 years old with at least valid Oklahoma Driver License, seated beside you. No wireless communication devices while driving except to report illegal activity or summon emergency help (Oklahoma Driver Manual).

2

Complete Supervised Driving

Before applying for an Intermediate License, you must have held the Learner Permit for at least 180 days (Chapter 1). Parent-Taught Driver Education requires 30 hours of classroom training and 55 hours of behind-the-wheel training (Chapter 1). Then do one of the following:

Age 15 (with driver education): Complete an approved driver education course. Hold permit 180 days. Present Work Zone Safe completion certificate.

Age 16 (without driver education): Hold permit 180 days. Pass vision, written, and driving exams at a Service Oklahoma location.

3

Intermediate License — Age 16 or 16½

Age 16 (with driver education): Must have held Learner Permit for at least 180 days, completed an approved driver education course, and present a Work Zone Safe completion certificate. Intermediate (T restriction) applies: drive freely 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.; school/church/work at any hour; max 1 non-household passenger; no wireless devices (Chapter 1).

Age 16½ (without driver education): Must have held Learner Permit for at least 180 days and present a Work Zone Safe certificate. Same T restrictions as above. May drive freely from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.. Also permitted at any hour to/from school activities, religious activities, and employment. With a licensed adult in front seat, any time. Only 1 non-household passenger. No wireless devices. T restriction removed after 1 year without driver education (Chapter 1).

4

Full Class D License — Age 18

At age 18, you are eligible for a full Class D License (no T restriction) by passing the vision, written, and driving tests — OR presenting a gold DE-99 completion slip from an approved driver's education course. Parent/guardian signature required for applicants under 18 (Chapter 1).

Oklahoma licenses can be issued for 4 or 8 years and expire on the last day of the month. You can renew up to 1 year before expiration. If expired more than 1 year, full retesting is required (Chapter 2).

• All permit holders and Intermediate License holders under 17 may not use any interactive wireless communication device while driving — except to report illegal activity or summon emergency help (Oklahoma Driver Manual).

• All applicants under 18 must have parent or guardian present at the exam station for every application.
