The knowledge test has a significant failure rate. Here's exactly what to study and how to walk in prepared.
The Oklahoma SOK knowledge test is based on the official Oklahoma Driver Manual. You need to score at least 80% to pass. There is no official time limit. The test can be taken at any Service Oklahoma driver license exam location — find yours at oklahoma.gov/service/locations/driving-auto-locations.html (Oklahoma Driver Manual).
If you fail, you must wait at least 1 day before retesting. Each retake requires a $4.00 retest fee. The Oklahoma Driver Manual does not state a maximum number of written test attempts.
Apply at any Service Oklahoma location. Schedule online at oklahoma.gov/service/locations or by phone at 405-522-7000.
BAC 0.08%+ for drivers 21+ = DUI. Under 21: any measurable alcohol = Zero Tolerance. 1st DUI conviction: misdemeanor, minimum 10 days in jail (up to 1 year), fine up to $1,000 (Chapter 12). Service Oklahoma suspends license 30 days on court conviction. Implied Consent: 180-day revocation if BAC test failed at scene. Refusing a BAC test = 180 days to 2 years automatic revocation.
Your license may be suspended if you accumulate 10 or more points within 5 years (Chapter 13). Reckless driving = 4 pts; speed 25+ over = 3 pts; careless/speed/following too close = 2 pts each; all other = 1 pt. Two points are deducted each clean year; back to zero after 3 clean years. License is revoked for: vehicular homicide, DUI conviction, any felony involving a motor vehicle, hit-and-run, or perjury on a license application (Chapter 13).
Learner Permit at age 15 (with driver education) or 16 (without). Hold permit at least 180 days. Intermediate License at 16 (with driver ed + Work Zone Safe cert) or 16½. Drive freely 5 a.m.–10 p.m.; also to/from school, religious, and work at any time. Max 1 non-household minor passenger. T restriction removed after 6 months (with DE) or 1 year (without). Full Class D License at age 18 (Oklahoma Driver Manual).
When approaching or passing a bicyclist, slow down and allow at least 3 feet (Title 47-11-1208-A). Do not pass a bicyclist immediately before making a right turn — slow down and let the cyclist clear the intersection first. Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles on the road (Oklahoma Driver Manual).
Maintain a minimum following distance of 3 seconds under normal conditions (Chapter 8). Under adverse conditions (rain, snow, ice, fog), use a 4-second following rule (Chapter 8). Increase even more when following motorcycles, large trucks, or when towing.
Signal at least 100 feet before making a turn or changing lanes. The Oklahoma manual requires signaling at least 100 feet or 1/3 of a block before turning (Chapter 6). Hold the signal until you are ready to make the actual turn.
You MUST stop for a school bus displaying red flashing lights — from any direction — unless you are approaching from the opposite direction on a divided highway. Remain stopped until the bus starts moving, the driver motions you to proceed, OR the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is retracted. Mandatory 1-year license revocation for failing to stop (Chapter 5).
Dim high beams when you come within 1,000 feet of an oncoming vehicle or within 600 feet of a vehicle you are following (Chapter 11). Use low beams in fog, rain, or snow. Headlights required beginning 30 minutes after sunset and until 30 minutes before sunrise (Chapter 11).
When parallel parking, the finished position must be within 18 inches of the curb or edge of road (Oklahoma Driver Manual). Know all 4 hill-parking scenarios: uphill with curb = turn wheels away from curb; downhill with curb = turn wheels into curb; no curb (either direction) = turn wheels toward edge of road (Oklahoma Driver Manual).
Children under 8 years old: must use a child passenger restraint system (Chapter 3). Rear-facing until age 2 or system weight/height limit. Children ages 4–7 (not taller than 4'9"): restraint OR seatbelt OK. Age 8+: seatbelt required. All children under 12 should sit in the rear seat (air bag safety, Chapter 3).
