How to Pass the RI DMV Written Test

The knowledge test trips up many first-time applicants. Here's exactly what to study and how to walk in prepared.

📋 Know the Test Format

The RI DMV computerized knowledge exam is 40 multiple-choice questions with a 90-minute maximum. You must score at least 80% to pass — meaning you need at least 32 correct and can miss up to 8.

If you fail, you must reschedule another knowledge-exam appointment at www.dmv.ri.gov. You are not eligible to retake the exam until your present permit has expired.

First-time applicants take the computerized exam at the main RI DMV office in Cranston by online reservation. Applicants who completed the 33-hour CCRI driver-education course have the option of taking the test through the college instead.

Drivers under 18 must complete an accredited 33-hour classroom driver education course before the knowledge exam. Drivers over 18 are not required to take the classroom course, but everyone must pass the knowledge exam.

🎯 Top 10 Most-Missed Topics

1

DUI & BAC Limits

Adults: 0.08% BAC = DUI. Drivers under 21: 0.02%–0.08% = DWI. CDL drivers: 0.04%. Implied consent means anyone operating a vehicle has consented to chemical tests of breath, blood, saliva, or urine (p. 61).

2

DUI Penalties

1st offense at 0.08%–0.10%: up to $300 fine, up to 1 year jail, 10–60 hours community service, 30–180 day suspension. At 0.15%+: up to $1,000 fine and 3–18 month suspension. Refusing a chemical test = minimum 6-month suspension on a 1st violation (p. 61).

3

GDL — Limited Learner & Provisional

Limited Learner Permit at 16 + 33 hours of driver-ed. Hold 6 months and log 50 supervised hours (10 at night) before the road test. Provisional: no solo driving 1:00 a.m.–5:00 a.m., max 1 non-family passenger under 21 in first 12 months (p. 10–14).

4

Following Distance

Use the 3-second rule in good conditions; add 1 second for each adverse condition (rain, fog, ice). Allow at least 4 seconds behind a motorcycle (p. 48, 50). Always stay 500 feet behind an emergency vehicle.

5

Speed Limits

Residential = 25 mph. Most highways 50–65 mph. The Basic Speed Law requires you to drive only as fast as conditions safely permit (p. 35–36). Speeding fines double in work zones, 24 hours a day.

6

Signal Distance & Turning

Signal at least 100 feet before any turn or lane change (p. 38). Right turn on red is allowed (unless prohibited by sign) after a complete stop. U-turns are allowed only when permitted and not interfering with traffic.

7

School Bus Rules

On any non-divided road, motorists from BOTH directions must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights. On a divided highway with a Jersey barrier, guardrail, grass, or cement median, opposite-direction traffic does NOT stop (p. 54). Yellow flashing = prepare to stop.

8

Headlights

Headlights required sunset to sunrise, when wipers are in use, or when you cannot see 500 feet ahead (p. 52). Dim high beams at 500 feet from oncoming vehicles and at 200 feet or less when following.

9

Parking Rules & Distances

No parking within: 8 ft of a fire hydrant, 20 ft of a crosswalk, 30 ft of a stop sign / signal, 50 ft of a rail, 20 ft of a fire-station driveway (75 ft on the opposite side with signs). Parallel: right wheels max 12 inches from curb (p. 33).

10

Child Restraint & Safety Belts

Children under 8 + under 57 inches + under 80 lbs must be in a child restraint in the rear seat. Rear-facing required until at least age 2 or 30 lbs. The vehicle operator is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 18 are belted (RIGL 31-22-22, p. 26).

💡 Study Strategies That Work

01

Aim for 90%+ in Practice

You only need 80% (32 of 40) to pass — but on test day you'll be slower and less confident. Hit 90%+ on practice quizzes here so the real exam feels easy.

02

Use the Key Numbers Quiz

Memorize BAC limits, distances (8 / 20 / 30 / 50 ft), the 100-ft signal rule, the 3-second following rule, and 1:00–5:00 a.m. curfew. These specific numbers appear on virtually every RI test.

03

Review Your Missed Questions

The Weak Spots mode saves every question you got wrong. Replay it until you're hitting 90%+ before going to the RI DMV office in Cranston.

04

Read the Official Handbook

Download the Rhode Island Driver's Manual (April 2024 edition) at www.dmv.ri.gov. Every question on the real test comes directly from this manual — pages 10–71 cover the full exam scope.

05

Know Your Speed Limits

Residential 25 mph is one of the most-missed numbers. Also remember: speeding fines double in work zones 24 hours a day, and the Basic Speed Law requires reducing speed for adverse conditions even on dry highways.

06

Study Road Signs

Sign questions are visual — shape, color, and meaning all matter. Use the Road Signs Quiz mode to practice every shape (octagon, pentagon, diamond, pennant) before test day.
